DESCRIPTION PROVIDED BY THE SCHOOL DISTRICT
Umonhon Nation Public School (UNPS) District is located on the Omaha Reservation in Macy, NE. An unicorporated town of about 1,000 is 27 miles south of South Sioux City and 72 miles north of Omaha. The PK-12 school has a student population of approximately 530, close to 100% of whom are Native American. The majority are Omaha tribal members. The school employs over 100 people that are dedicated to helping to fulfil the school’s mission: “through positive interaction with the Omaha Tribal community, is to provide a student-centered education in a safe and respectful learning environment allowing our students to strengthen Native American traditions yet flourish in other cultures.” UNPS School Board, Tribal Council, and community as a whole supports the school’s effort to provide a quality, culturally relevant education.
