DESCRIPTION PROVIDED BY THE SCHOOL BUILDING
Gomez Heritage Elementary, which opened on August 25, 2004, is a Pre-kindergarten through fourth grade school located at 5101 South 17th Street in the southeast area of the Omaha Public School District. The school was built on a bluff that the community called Goat Mountain. Gomez Heritage was named in honor of Edward “Babe” Gomez, a Korean War hero from this South Omaha community and Heritage to honor the many ethnic groups that settled this neighborhood. Gomez Heritage has approximately 860 students. The school offers a Spanish Dual Language program in all grades. There are 52 classrooms, two Discovery Centers, a media center, a Family Room, a multi-purpose room/cafeteria, a gymnasium, and two award-winning Outdoor Classrooms. Eight portable classrooms were added in recent years to support the growing student population.
