DESCRIPTION PROVIDED BY THE SCHOOL BUILDING
King Elementary is located at 3706 Maple Street and is named after Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. This was the first Omaha Public School named after a famous African-American. The school opened in 1973 as a middle school, later became a ninth grade center and then a primary grade center. In 1999, King Elementary was named a neighborhood Academy School to house students from Head Start through grade six. King serves students in grades PK-5. King provides several resources to students and families such as, Community and Schools Liaison, literacy coach, math coach, reading specialist, two resource teachers and a library media specialist. King Elementary is active in the Adopt-a-School Program with Security National Bank, Popeyes, Love Jazz Arts Museum, Great Plains Black History Museum, and Fazolií. As an elementary school, King boasts small class sizes of approximately 17 in the primary grades and approximately 22 in the intermediate grades.
