DESCRIPTION PROVIDED BY THE SCHOOL BUILDING
Wasmer Elementary School is located at 318 S. Clark Street, a few blocks from the major retail section of the city and just eight blocks east of the original building. The building was named for Mr. Charles Wasmer, who donated the land for this school. The first Wasmer school was erected in 1886 on this site. It was a one-story, two-room and basement brick building. The custodian lived in the basement. It cost $5,125 to build. The building was completely rebuilt and enlarged in 1926, in 1943, and again in 1950. A two room temporary building was added to the site in 1989 t relieve the crowded conditions. The new Wasmer Elementary building was opened in August for the 2000-2001 school year. At the time, it had several features that make the building different than most in Grand Island. A the present time, Wasmer is a three unit school and has a modular with two additional classrooms. Wasmer Elementary is a school-wide Title I School.
